Malt is not the name of a cereal. Malt is usually the short name for "malted barley". Malt is define as barley (or grain) prepared for brewing (bier) or distilling (whisky) by steeping, germination and kilning (i.e., drying). After steeping (immersion of the grain in water), the grain is left to germinate until sprouting. It is then called green malt.
